In Guildford, England, he was born on October 2, 1950. Rutherford released two solo albums in the early 1980s in addition to his many years with Genesis. He founded the hugely successful spin-off combo Mike + The Mechanics in 1985, which went on to become a chart-topping and major live draw. The Living Years, co-written by Rutherford and B.A. Robertson won an Ivor Novello Award for the band’s triumph in 1988. Genesis embarked on a worldwide tour to promote their album Invisible Touch in the mid-1980s.
The tour was huge, with 111 events in 59 cities across 16 countries and three million fans in attendance. Rolling Stone magazine named Genesis Band of the Year in their annual reader’s poll shortly after they returned from their massive tour. At the age of eight, Rutherford acquired his first guitar, and at the age of nine, he joined his first band, The Chesters. He joined the band Anon at the age of 13 and developed a creative partnership with fellow guitarist Anthony Phillips, with whom he eventually created Genesis at the age of 15.
