In Guildford, England, he was born on October 2, 1950. Rutherford released two solo albums in the early 1980s in addition to his many years with Genesis. He founded the hugely successful spin-off combo Mike + The Mechanics in 1985, which went on to become a chart-topping and major live draw. The Living Years, co-written by Rutherford and B.A. Robertson won an Ivor Novello Award for the band’s triumph in 1988. Genesis embarked on a worldwide tour to promote their album Invisible Touch in the mid-1980s.

The tour was huge, with 111 events in 59 cities across 16 countries and three million fans in attendance. He joined the band Anon at the age of 13 and developed a creative partnership with fellow guitarist Anthony Phillips, with whom he eventually created Genesis at the age of 15. With his wife Angie, Rutherford resides in Surrey, England. They married on November 13, 1976, and have three children together.
