Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones was born on September 14, 1973, in Brooklyn. Olu Dara, his father, hails from Mississippi, and Fannie Ann, his mother, hails from North Carolina. Nas played on Main Source’s “Live at the Barbeque” in 1991. Nas signed a record deal with Columbia Records in mid-1992, due to his then-manager, MC Serch. Nas made his solo debut on the tune “Halftime” from MC Serch’s soundtrack for the film Zebrahead. Nas’s rhyming abilities drew a lot of attention from the hip-hop scene.

Illmatic, Nas’s debut album, was released in 1994.
