On February 7, 1965, Christopher Julius Rock was born in Andrews, South Carolina. New York City’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood became Rock’s new home following a second relocation. There were many white classmates who bullied him and harassed him as a child in Brooklyn’s mostly white neighborhoods. He dropped out of high school due to the harassment and eventually acquired his GED while working at fast-food restaurants to support himself.

It was at New York City’s Catch a Rising Star club where Rock made his stand-up comedy debut in 1984. As he continued to act, he acquired more and more notoriety, landing parts in shows like “Miami Vice.” Eddie Murphy, who heard Rock sing at a nightclub and befriended him, mentored him and even gave him a part in “Beverly Hills Cop II” during these formative years (1987).

Success in Comedy and Saturday Night Live
As of 1990, Rock was a cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL). They quickly earned the nickname “Bad Boys of SNL” with Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, and David Spade, who were all newcomers to the show. In 1991, he published his first comedy album, “Born Suspect.” His performance as a drug addict in the film “New Jack City” was much praised that year.
When Rock departed Saturday Night Live two years later for the mostly black sketch program “In Living Color,” he did it to compete for prime time attention. According to reports, Chris had to make an estimated $40 million in alimony and property settlement payments to his ex-wife.

Real Estate
During Chris’ tenure on Saturday Night Live, he was able to purchase a property in Brooklyn, New York. During that time, he married Malaak and moved to the suburbs. A year later, he offered the Brooklyn house for sale for $3.25 million, after renting it for $8,000 per month. Malaak remained in the $3 million Alpine, New Jersey estate the family had purchased in 2001 after their divorce.
